Hatchet Blog Circle Roles

Connector
Your job is to find 4-5 connections between the novel your group is reading and the world beyond. This means connecting the reading to your own life, to happenings at school or in the community, to similar events at other times and places, to other people or problems that you are reminded of. You might also see connections between this book and other writings on the same topic or by the same author. This post needs to be complete, which may require some real consideration and thoughtful analysis on your part.

What is your connection? What part of the story (page and word, sentence, phrase or paragraph) made the connection for you? How does your connection relate to the story?
Did you understand the story better? Why? Could you better understand a character’s feelings? Why?

Discussion Director
Your job is to prepare a list of at least five excellent questions that you have developed for your group to discuss about this novel. Do not worry about small details: your task is to help people talk over the big ideas in the reading and share their reactions. Usually the best questions come from your own thoughts, feelings, and concerns as yon read.
Questions
What is your question? What part of the story (page and word, sentence, phrase or paragraph) is your question about?
Does your question ask people to explain and give reasons for their answers?

Vocabulary Enricher
Your job is to be on the lookout for 5-6 especially important words in the reading. If you find words that are puzzling or unfamiliar, mark them while you are reading, and then later jot down their definition, either from a dictionary or some other source. You may also run across familiar words that stand out somehow in the reading--words that are repeated a lot, used in an unusual way, or key to the meaning to the text.
Vocabulary
What is your vocabulary word?
Why did you pick this word? What is the definition of the word? How does this word fit into the story?

Character Analyst
Your job is to keep a list of the characters in the novel and describe their traits. You need to prove to your group that a particular trait exists. Therefore, include supporting evidence from the novel by referring to a specific page, passage, or event. You may analyze different characters or focus on different traits in the same character. You might also want to focus on traits that are especially affecting the conflict in the novel.

Passage Summary
After you have read the assigned chapter from your novel, think about the key ideas of what you have read. Write a summary which contains the key ideas and events of the chapter you read:

Comments
· What is your comment? · Who is your comment for? · What are you commenting on?
o What part of someone’s post are you commenting on?
o Explain why you agree or disagree.
o Support your comments with evidence from the text or connections you have made.

General
Use accurate names of characters and places instead of he, she, it, them and there.
Reread and edit your work for readability by checking your spelling, grammar, sentence and structure.
